The Machinery Directive specifies the essential health and safety requirements with which machinery must comply during design, manufacture and operation, before they can be released onto the market. The directive governs the extensive field of machinery intended primarily for use in industrial environments and its safety components. It establishes the obligation of compliance with the essential safety requirements, and requires CE marking on the basis of a declaration of conformity to be drawn up by the manufacturer.
The Machinery Directive divides products into two main categories: Annex IV and other products (non-Annex IV). The items included in the first category must obtain certification (EU type-examination) from a notified body such as IMQ. However, many manufacturers of machine components not falling within the scope of Annex IV seek support from third-party bodies to ensure that their products conform with regulatory requirements.
