The purpose of this mark is to provide customers with a guarantee that the veracity of self-declared environmental claims about products has been verified by an independent third party. The assessment process is rigorous and conforms with ISO 14021, as well as a specific IMQ protocol approved by an independent technical committee.
The following are examples of certifiable claims: carbon footprint, recyclable, recycled content, low energy consumption, reduced waste, product with extended service life, low use of resources, designed for disassembly.
The need to develop this certificate arose from the existence of many self-declared environmental claims that are not subject to any verification. In many cases, these amount to green-washing, and provide an unclear, untruthful or misleading perception of sustainability. So for consumers, the IMQ-ECO mark is a guarantee of the veracity of any environmental claims made about the product they intend to purchase.
